Stand Up America’s Letter-Writing Campaign Success
*Here's a screen shot of one of the published letters
The Stand Up America community has been making waves with their persistent and passionate advocacy, and we're excited to share their latest success. Utilizing New/Mode’s powerful Letter to The Editor tactic, Stand Up America has facilitated the submission of over 3,700 letters to editors nationwide since Trump’s guilty verdict. This grassroots effort has ensured that the public remains informed about the ongoing threats to democracy and fundamental freedoms.
Nearly 70 of these letters have been published in prominent outlets such as The Mountaineer in North Carolina, The Sheboygan Press in Wisconsin, the Rocket-Courier in Pennsylvania, and the Orlando Weekly in Florida. This incredible achievement highlights the power of community-driven activism and the effectiveness of New/Mode’s platform in amplifying voices and driving impactful change.
Kananaskis Clearcut Has Been Paused
In February 2024, the dedicated supporters of the "Take a Stand for Kananaskis" campaign achieved a significant victory. Over 6,731 supporters have signed the campaign, inches away from their goal of 6,800! Thanks to thousands' relentless advocacy and collective action, the planned clearcutting of over 1,000 hectares in Kananaskis Country has been officially paused.
This achievement highlights the power of community-driven activism, demonstrating that it is possible to #DefendAlbertaForests and protect public lands from being destroyed for private profit. While the fight is not over, this pause is a testament to the impact of every voice raised and every message sent. Care Workers Win Status on Arrival!
On June 3rd, we witnessed a monumental achievement that has been years in the making. The federal government announced that migrant care workers in Canada will now receive permanent resident status upon arrival. This change means that migrants, primarily racialized women who care for children, the sick, and the elderly, will now enter the country as permanent residents rather than temporary foreign workers.
For decades, these workers have been told that their demand for a single-tier system with permanent resident status on arrival was impossible. But through relentless struggle and perseverance, they have achieved the impossible. Congratulations to Migrant Rights Network and others.
Federal Court Upholds Ban on Fish Farms in Discovery Islands
In a landmark ruling on June 7th, the Federal Court of Canada upheld former Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray's decision to keep fish farms out of the Discovery Islands, a crucial migratory route for wild salmon. This decision, challenged by B.C. salmon farmers and some First Nations, was upheld as fair and reasonable, marking a significant win for conservation efforts.
The court's ruling dismissed claims that the Minister's decision was unfair, noting her extensive consultation with industry, First Nations, and civil society. Conservation groups, including the David Suzuki Foundation, SeaChoice, and Living Oceans Society, supported by Ecojustice, intervened in the case, emphasizing the environmental risks posed by the 17 salmon farms in the region near Campbell River, B.C.
This ruling has profound implications for the conduct of science within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, emphasizing the importance of independent research and environmental stewardship. The decision effectively ends the prospect of open-net pen salmon farming in the Discovery Islands, safeguarding the region's ecological integrity and supporting the survival of wild salmon populations.
